Nature, time and patience are the three great healers...Fortune cookie proverb

DBN is fortunate to be in the middle of a rather large track of wooded land and also be the beginning of a stream (Bear Hole Creek Run) that eventually leads into Leesville Lake. Because of this setting, we have a fair amount of wildlife. Official spottings to-date include:

Birds: turkey; grouse; pileated, red bellied, red headed, downy and hairy woodpeckers; northern flickers; great blue and green heron; osprey; harrier red tailed, sharp shin and coopers hawks; buzzard (that get lost on the way to Hinkley); crow; great horned, barred and screech owls; mallard, ring necked, hooded merganser, greater scaup and wood ducks; Canadian geese (of course); blue birds; indigo bunting; scarlet tanager; brown creeper; chickadee; nut hatch; king fisher; junko; cardinal; blue jay; morning doves; robin; tufted tit mouse; yellow(an all the others) finch; toe hee; brown headed cowbird; eastern kingbird, just to name a few...

Mammals: beaver; muskrat; ground hogs (of course); coyote; fox; deer; cotton tailed rabbit; raccoon; opossum; flying, pine, red and gray squires; ...

Fish/reptiles: large mouth bass, bluegill, catfish; snapping, painted and eastern box turtles, green, peeper and bull frogs; toads; garter, black and milk snakes...

We also try to have some fun. We have hosted several parties here at the farm, including our wedding in 1999. We have had hayrides, pumpkin carving contests, swimming, canoeing, fishing, sled riding (slightly dangerous with the multitude of trees and briar bushes), and ice-skating events as well. We have 2+ miles of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Several great camping spots are also available around the lake and in the pine forests.
